There’s nothing more quintessentially Sundance than a heartfelt coming-of-age film, right? It’s not a dig at the genre at all. Movies that explore those familiar themes can be really satisfying, like Megan Park’s charming “My Old Ass” was at this year’s festival. On the other hand, Laura Chinn’s “Suncoast” falls into the category of forgettable teen films, lacking the depth and character development needed to truly connect with its audience.

Chinn’s story follows Doris, played by the lovable Nico Parker, as she navigates a difficult home life with her brother Max who is terminally ill, and her emotionally volatile mother Kristine. Doris is a sensible and endearing teenager, but she seems oblivious to her own beauty, overshadowed by her brother’s illness. When Max’s condition worsens, the family moves him to a hospice where Kristine spends her nights. It’s there that Doris meets Paul Warren, an activist involved in a right-to-die court case, and their unlikely friendship begins to blossom.

While Chinn’s script may fall short in capturing the authenticity of their relationship, it does succeed in showing Doris’ growth as she starts to break out of her shell. With her mother away at night, Doris starts hosting parties and sleepovers with her new friends, played by Ella Anderson, Daniella Taylor, Amarr, and Ariel Martin. Initially, her friends don’t seem to notice her, which feels a bit unrealistic given Doris’ warm personality. But overall, the film struggles to fully explore the emotional depth needed to truly resonate with the audience. Watch this full length movie on Myflixer without paying for any subscription charges.
